Working for Christ, each believer has been equipped with a skill, a talent, a passion by God to help improve the Body of Christ. A body cannot function properly without an arm or a leg (1 Corinthians 12:16-27). The Body of Christ needs us to function.
The Body of Christ is spread across the world to save those who are lost and not only for the edification of the believers.
The lost are those who are unaware of Christ and what He did for us by dying on the cross, or who know but do not believe in Christ. It is the church's function to guide the lost into the Good News of Christ. We bring His light into the oppressed world and lead the lost into the light of His glory.
God loves the lost and the believers. He said He had 100 sheep and one was lost, and would go out to find the lost one and bring it back to the 99. Everyone belongs to God, but some have gotten lost, and it is the work of the believers to bring the lost back into the Body of Christ. Luke 15:7 shows that a lost soul causes more rejoicing than the current believers.
Believers go through many life circumstances, but God already knows all this and sees if we will turn to Him during these harsh times. The Body of Christ — other believers — are also there to help and comfort the believers during the hard times they are facing. We are meant to show love, help those who need help at all times, and not speak ill of other believers when they are going through this.
The Bible in Romans 15:2 says to serve our neighbor, which also means our fellow believers, those who are close to us. In doing so, we strengthen them spiritually and physically. If we help others and they also help others, we build and strengthen the Church (the Body of Christ).
We the saints have been equipped to edify the Body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12) through the gifts that were given to the Body of Christ — apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers — until there's unity in the faith we all have. The five are meant to perfect us by preparing us for the purpose Christ has called us for in His Body. By us being equipped and doing the works of ministry, we build up the Body of Christ, the Church.

Now, you may say:
One reason may be that we obtain eternal life by believing He died for us on the cross, as said in John 3:16. That alone is a sufficient gift from God to us for being in the Body of Christ, but that can't be the only reason for us to be a part of the Body.
Being a part of the Body brings many gifts: peace, joy, love, greatness, and many more. You can say, "People who don't believe or have other religions have these things." Well, yes, they can have all these things, but it never lasts for long. With God, we gain eternal peace, joy, and love.
We may go through tribulations, but Christ also went through the same, and all of this was done through His love for us. The gifts of believing in Christ alone outweigh all the things this world has to offer, both here on earth and in heaven. God loves us and will always be on our side.
Lastly, we receive the Holy Spirit from being a part of the Body of Christ. The Holy Spirit is the one whom Jesus left for us when He rose back up to be with the Father. The Holy Spirit guides us through our stay here on earth; He disciplines us, comforts us, and builds us up to reflect God through us (this is by shaping our behavior and guiding our actions).
Everything we do — from saving the lost to building up one another — leads us to our ultimate calling: καταρτισμὸν (katartismos) — the active equipping, perfecting, and fitting together of the saints. We are being perfectly prepared by God so that His Body can function in unity, rise up with power, and reflect His glory to the world.
